Gilets

Gilets are your go to item when the seasons are turning (warmer or colder) and you're not entirely sure a jacket is needed. Even during the height of summer, a long descent, during a long, sweaty ride, can be quite a chilly experience. Essentially a Gilet is a sleeveless jacket designed to keep your core warm and protect you from the wind or that unexpected shower. Being prepared will make all the difference for your ride if the wind picks up or the rain starts. You will find there is a variety of Gilets offering warmth as well as protection and may be categorised as spring and autumn.

Spring/Summer - Typically lightweight, designed to protect your torso at the start or end of a ride, and then tightly packed away in your jersey pocket when the temperature rises or you get warm enough.
Autumn/Winter Gilets - Typically heavier due to the increased fabric texture for wind blocking, or with a layer of insulation. These Gilets are not intended to be packed away in your jersey. A storm flap or taped zip is usually a design feature to prevent cold air or rain getting through.
The main factors to consider when purchasing your Gilet are: When do you intend wearing it - casual rides or long training rides? What season and does it need to be packable? Uncertain, buy a couple with differing designs and fabric. Best to keep your options open!
