MTB Shoes

There are two types of MTB shoes - shoes for flat pedals and shoes for clip-less pedals. Choosing the right shoe is beneficial for several reasons.
Cycling shoes have a stiff structure. This makes each pedal stroke more efficient and aids energy transfer. A stiff sole also gives you more support for long rides.
With platform/flat pedals, a specific shoe isn't essential, but can be helpful. Having a shoe with a soft, grippy, outsole will help keep your feet planted firmly on the pedal.

If your pedals are clip-less, you will need shoes that allow for cleats to be mounted to the sole. MTB clip-less shoes typically have a 2 bolt mounting system, which unlike clip-less road shoes, is recessed into the sole. This makes them easier to walk in and useful for when riding the bike becomes impossible. Shimano, Crank Brothers, and Speedplay all use a 2 bolt cleat with their MTB pedals.
A good fitting MTB shoe should feel slightly more snug than normal shoes, but not restrictive. Always order your regular shoe size unless you have tried on a different size that fits well, or have personal knowledge a particular brand's sizing.
