Children love cycling. It's time spent with you, talking together, discovering things and enjoying fresh air and exercise. They pick up on your enthusiasm. And as they get older, a bicycle is their independence long before the first motor vehicle comes along. If one of you is an experienced cyclist, buy your other half a reasonable bike one of a quality you'd consider for yourself, even if it's different from the kind of bike you'd choose. Keep it running as sweetly as one of your own, giving it a spin around the block periodically to check things are all as they should be.

On family rides, let the less experienced partner set the pace and the mileage, and level the playing field by fitting the trailer, child seat or luggage to the more experienced riders bike. Stay away from busy roads, which are intimidating and prevent conversation due to noisy traffic. Younger children won't need much entertaining, but they'll want to stretch their legs, so aim for somewhere with a bit of grass or a play area. Keep mileages low and take plenty of snacks and drinks.

As a toy, the scooter has been around for many years and has changed very little in design. Kids have used scooters for street and park riding since the outset. Today the two most popular styles of scooters available, stunt and folding are probably the biggest selling types of scooter. Both the folding and stunt scooter are very similar in design with the main difference being the ability to fold the handle down and flat for transportation and storage. The stunt scooter has the T-shape or Y-shaped handlebar fixed in the upright position. Stunt scooters also tend to be of a higher quality and usually more robust to take the knocks of street stunt and freestyle riding.

Both types of scooter are usually fitted with polyurethane wheels and high-quality bearings but lower specification scooters may have larger wheels with pneumatic tyres. The stunt scooter is usually made from high-grade aluminum, Chromoly or, sometimes, titanium as they need to very strong and durable with the deck covered in a non-slip, gritted adhesive. The quality of the wheels and bearings also tend to be of a higher specification on the top-end stunt scooters. Today’s skate parks are often frequented by youngsters, male and female, making the most of their stunt scooters. Budget scooters are an ideal way of introducing kids to the skill of using a scooter and if the bug bites, investing in a quality scooter will provide days, months and years of entertainment.
